Hello to the young people in Taiwan who care about our beautiful natural environment and our earth
My name's Sophie and I'm from new Zealand
So I'm speaking to you today as part of the U20 International Youth Forum hosted by CommonWealth Magazine Group
I'm here to talk a little bit about my experience
as the founder of School Strike 4 Climate here in Aotearoa in New Zealand
and also about my role now as a District Councilor
So I'm New Zealand's youngest elected representative
Now I got involved with environmental justice
and standing up for this one planet that we all share and call home
when I was only 12 years old
My parents got a letter in the mail from our local council
which now I sit on as an elected representative
saying that sea level rise would have a detrimental impact on our property
and on our family's life and where we live
would be impacted quite severely by sea level rise
which is an impact of climate change
and impact of all of us humans putting these gases
these nasty gases into the atmosphere
So for me
this was a big wakeup call and I was only 12 years old
and my parents were sitting around our dining room table
looking pretty confused and I guess a little bit fearful
about what this letter meant for our family
So I asked them
asked questions and being a curious 12 year old
I think curiosity is a really important thing that we have to hold on to
I asked those questions
I dug deeper
and I found out more about climate change
And for me as a young person
I'm still young 19 years old
But at 12 years old, I was like, wow, is this what my future might be
constantly running away from these impacts of climate change
And what kind of a future will be
I have to be able to pass on to the next generation
So for me, hearing about this
but have been asking more questions and understanding
that some people are on the frontlines of climate change right now
They're already facing these impacts every single day
People in the Pacific with the sea level is at their doorsteps
It's knocking
They're having to leave their homes to leave their culture
to leave their families behind
And frankly, we need to be doing better as a society
as a world, figuring out how we can coexist with the planet
So people don't have to have those kinds of impacts impose on their lives
especially those who are contributing so little to the problem
So leading on from there
I got quite involved in eco action group at high school
and then I decided to take a gap year
GAP YEAR”
So I graduated from high school
decided not to go to university straight away
And with my gap year
GAP YEAR”
I knew that I wanted to do something that felt meaningful
and we know that we're running out of time to act on the climate crisis
We've got 10 years to have our missions to be in
with a chance of staying below 1.5 degrees of warming
That's not long
And our generation literally has the ability to save the entire world
for the next generation and all the generations that follow
So for me
I knew that I had to do something that truly allowed me
to step into my role and being a protector
And what we say in Maori language
which is the language of indigenous people in New Zealand
Being a Kaitiaki of the land
which means protecting and acting in our role
and fulfilling our responsibility as a guardian of our land
because we don't exist if we don't have our land
We have to recognize that
We have to recognize that we exist in this environment
where our environment is to be thriving for our own wellbeing
to also be thriving
So I organized some climate strikes with my gap year last year
Why I did that was because I want to be able to say
that I did everything in my power while we still could to
ensure that we have a safe, livable, beautiful, hopefully
even more beautiful than we see now planet to pass on to the next generation
I don't want to be able to say that I sit on my hands
I don't want to be able to say that I knew what was happening in our world
but decided to just sit silent and decided to follow a path
that I didn't feel like was going have an impact
So throughout the challenge is that coordinating school strike
for climate brought that I had to stay very connected to why I was doing that
And that why is really connected to a conversation
that I might have with
If I have children, what I might have with them in the future
When they're like
Sophie did you know that the world was going to be like this when you were our age?
Were you aware of it?
I don't want to have to say that
Yes, I was aware but I didn't do everything I could
And I think for me that's a deep why
that I can almost see that conversation playing out of my head
And I just want to be able to say that I did everything
while we still could
while we still had time
What we did was originally
the group was five or six of us from my high school
I got them together first
And then we grew the movement across New Zealand
First of all, the five of us got together in theater
We all are feeling this way
We're feeling fearful about what might happen if we don't stand up now
So all of us came together and see
now is the moment, what can we do?
We started talking and found that
there was an international strike day on the 15th of March
So quickly rallied together with some of our peers across the country
We made a social media, social media platforms and a website
And very quickly the movement grew
So essentially
we put those platforms up not having a whole lot of an idea
about how this strike would look or what kind of things
we needed to do logistically to organize them
But we found very quickly
that people came on board that had those kinds of skills
So we opened up our team and see it
We need to do something
And this is why
Because now is the only time,
the only moment in time where we have to save the world
and that we have to truly be able to make transformational change
before it's too late and a lot of people resonated with that
That really rang true to them
So they joined us
So we gathered around 20000 people on the first strike day
around 30000 on our second strike day last year
And then in September
we had 170000 people out on the streets for climate justice
And the ability, I think
that we had to do that was only through having a big team of people
who have reached into so many different parts of New Zealand
We had people in really small rural areas
We had people in big cities
But we made sure that all of those people had just
as much of a voice as part of the national movement
Something that was also, became very clear to us was that
we had to communicate based on values
Because some people who we thought might not be
on board ended up being on board
and being really loud champions of the planet
and of climate justice throughout the organizing process
and on the March day itself
So we found that if we communicated in a way
that united people behind protecting our common planet
that we all call home
that was a way that we could bring people along
who might not have otherwise jumped on board
So, for us, September 27th was a huge day in New Zealand history
the largest strike that we've seen
We had 290 businesses close for the day
And again, that was all because we communicated in my belief
we communicated simply
And we communicated in a way that united people
because we cannot afford to be divided at this time
when the world needs us the most
And that message, I think, is simple,
but one that we can all share
and through our conversations that we're having in this space
because we do truly need to bring people together
I think the effect that this had cannot be underestimated
The Prime Minister rang us up
and said that she wanted to meet with our team
and we had meetings with the Climate Change Minister
We were part of ensuring that the Zero Carbon Bill
which is now a law, had cross party support
So we put pressure on all of the different parties in Parliament
to again framing in a way that makes this conversation about values
It's not about which side of Parliament you are on
or which side of the political spectrum with you
the left or the right
But it's actually about recognizing that for any issue
that people might be concerned about or anything
that they might be here about
we need a thriving planet to even be able to focus on those things
For example, our economy
we don't have an economy if we don't have a planet
For example, our social and wellbeing issues
we can actually fix some of those through our solutions to climate change
So if we frame it in a way that brings people along on that journey
I think that is how we had 170000 people
And also because all of us as part of a team
stay really connected to why we were doing it
and didn't let anything else take that spot
and we didn't let anything else kind of dominate that why
So staying connected figuring out your WHY first
and then making sure that you channel that
and you stay connected to your WHY
So leading on from that after September 27th
the strike of 170,000 people around the country
our team our School Strike 4 Climate team in New Zealand
is now around 40 50 people to a big team
but we have a very grassroots way of organizing
We're not that structured
We are agile. We are quick
We allow people to focus on their skills
and their passions within the movement
So we've been very clear to say that there's a role
there’s a space for anyone and everyone
No matter your age
we are mainly a team of younger people
Just to make sure the movement is led by youth
because that's the phrase of the future movement
and how it started internationally as well
But we're really conscious that
this does need to be an intergenerational effort
And that the burden cannot be fully placed on young people
We've got young people as young as 8 and 10 years old
joining in to help organize
And while that makes me really happy to see
it also kind of breaks my heart
Because these kids
these young people should be out enjoying those years of their life
that they'll never get back
And they shouldn't have to be worrying about
this exponential threat. That is climate change
So I'd love to see a world where we can truly coexist with our environment
and everything that we do
But also where these young people
we don't have to stand up for our environment
where we actually can enjoy and appreciate it
knowing that everyone else is doing the same
And also now, as I was saying before
but then went out a bit of the attention
after September 27th the strike being
I decided to run for Council, local government
I'm really excited about this journey
that i've only been on it for a year now
I've got two more years left of my term
and I might decide to run again
I am the youngest Councilor in New Zealand
and also have the youth on climate change portfolios
And what I'm really keen to see happen inside of council
is to make sure that in every single aspect of council’s work
that climate change is a consideration
and is truly integrated into every decision
that we're making because all of these things are inextricably linked
The intersectionality of these issues
and of decisions that we make affect so many different things
And we cannot afford to further affect the climate crisis in a negative way
So I've been really conscious to make sure
that every decision I make should have a positive impact
That's on my own personal life, but also on Council
And I'm learning so much throughout this journey
And I'm also realizing that it's okay to not have all the answers
because it is a process
It's a journey and something that I think we're all on together
So I'm always here to support any young person
who's kind of going through potentially similar things
or looking to come up against politics
or to get involved with politics, should I say?
And for me
it's just about being a voice for our planet in spaces
where our planet can't speak for itself
A planet can’t speak for itself anywhere eventually though
because it doesn't have a voice
So the planet is crying out for us
It's crying out for people like you
And it's crying out for people like us
to also connect with one another and do all that we can
